FUNNELWEB FILTERS INSIGHT

Each month we are going to bring you some of the extended family that are apart of the West racing program and what products are sought after from there list of goodies.

This month we have opened up a long time friend that has been apart of the program for a number of years now, John Rickman at Funnel Web Filters, hope you enjoy the below story.

You may not have heard of us but we have been involved in the Australian Off Road Racing Industry for several years, developing what we believe to be a vastly improved foam air filter.

The FunnelWeb Filter was designed and is manufactured by Infiltration Pty Ltd, an Australian owned company which has more than 30 years experience with foam filtration within the organisation.

Foam air filters have been used in off road motorcycles for nearly four decades and are now standard equipment in the vast majority of off-road motorcycles worldwide.

The foam filter’s basic design has had little change since its inception so we decided to do something about it.

We have utilised the latest technologies in open cell polyurethane foam profiling to substantially increase the filter’s surface area, not only offering more protection, but enabling the filter to last longer before cleaning and re-oiling.

Tough, injection moulded urethane seals were chosen for a precise fit, positive seal and strength on most of the range, whilst flexible neoprene seals are fitted on some filters including the Minibike range.

Over the years, close to two thousand filters have been tested in some of the harshest conditions imaginable to give us the confidence in putting FunnelWeb to market.

With the invaluable assistance of the Motorex KTM Off-Road and JDR KTM Factory Racing teams we have been fortunate to be able to utilise the best test beds available: the race track.

THE BENEFITS

Why Choose a FunnelWeb Filter?

1. The Foam!

The FunnelWeb’s profile cut foam effectively doubles the filters external surface area, without increasing the filters original size, enabling it to trap and hold far more dust on the outer surface meaning more protection to the engine while maintaining optimal air flow and extending filter service intervals.

The single layer, single density polyurethane foam has the added advantage of ease of cleaning and the ability to maintain its original shape after numerous cleans. As any dirt is spread over a much larger surface area, airflow restriction caused by dirt build up is minimised substantially. Overall, compared with conventional foam filters, FunnelWeb offers more protection from dirt ingestion, has longer service intervals and maintains high airflow rates when dirty.

2. The Filter Seal

Most FunnelWeb Filter seals are constructed from injection moulded urethane for a lasting, precise fit on the filter support frame and the inside of the air box. Foam seals, as fitted to other filter brands, will tend to stretch out of shape after a few cleans resulting in a poor fit to the support frame, possibly affecting the filters sealing ability. Not all filters in our range are suitable for moulded seals and the few that are not feature neoprene / nitrile foam gaskets.

3. Refined Development Process

FunnelWeb Filter has been developed over more than five years with the assistance of the motocross and enduro Australian KTM Race Teams. Numerous combinations of foam profiles and porosities have been tested in harsh, dusty race conditions and test tracks to come up with the ideal combination. More than 1,500 filters were manufactured, tested and either serviced and reused, or cut open for inspection before any were made available for sale.

4. Australian Manufacturing

We specialise in the manufacture of selected off-road motorcycle filters. Our range will be expanded in the future to include other models and ATVs. All componentry and packaging are Australian made and the product is assembled in our manufacturing facility in Newcastle NSW.
